When I read about the popularity of La Perla lingerie boutiques in Saudi Arabia, I was a bit surprised that lingerie will be so popular in a country where women are covered from head to toe. Considering how conservative Saudi men appear to be, I almost believe that they will be offended if their wives were dressed in seductive lingerie. I guess all cultures are much more complex than this simplified view, but I learned that like the women in the West, Saudi girls are as insecure as anyone else. According to a study completed by the Saudi government agency, nine out of ten women suffer from low self esteem due to dissatisfaction with how they look.
So it is clear that lingerie is just one way for them to spice up their appearance and feel better about themselves. The second thing they do is to hit the beauty clinics and spas for a range of makeup and beauty treatments (skin whitening is very popular).
So far so good, but then things get scary. Like the craze for going under the knife in South Korea or Brazil or the US, Saudi women too are now hitting the plastic surgery clinics, both at home and abroad. The numbers are shocking. One out of three teens want cosmetic surgery and about 40% of girls between the ages of 28 and 37 have already had a procedure.
