You can visit many spa-related websites and bulletin boards, ask friends, and check magazines that review spas in your city. For example in the Boston area, the Improper Bostonian has extensive reviews on spas in the area. If you are going to buy the gift certificate on the Internet, we suggest you use respected websites. For example, there are a few among them: Spa Wish, Spa Finder, Spa Addict, etc.

5. Is it safe to buy a spa gift certificate over the Internet?

Yes, it is as safe as most ecommerce is when you order something from a website based in the United States or any other developed country. If in doubt or you have questions, find the phone number and call them up. 

If the website does not list a phone number or physical address or the About Us section looks incomplete/suspicious, you might want to find other spas. Never buy from a website that offers huge discounts, is probably based in some foreign country that you have never heard of, and does not offer a local phone number that you can call. Usually the spa will mail the gift certificate to you or to the person you indicate. It is generally very convenient. Sometimes the spas also have their own Internet gift certificate shop and you can buy directly.
