Neuromuscular Integrative Action (NIA)
A remarkable fitness and healing system

Oh boy! Doesn't that sound too technical for you? Actually it is not. This is an exercise inspired by Asian fitness techniques mixed with dance. It is one of the most exotic and at the same time entertaining fitness exercise. Imagine the playfulness of modern and ethnic dance, the intense power of Tae Kwon Do and Aikido, and the concentration of yoga and tai chi. Put all of them together in a diverse blend of right ambience and pop music and you now have the outline for NIA. NIA requires no equipment and can be performed with or without shoes. (Related article:  Yoga for weight loss)

Goal of NIA
NIA is a fitness technique that specifically aims to integrate body, mind, and spirit through movement. A typical NIA session resembles the format of a traditional aerobics class. The instructor leads students through a warm-up characterized by meditative music and attention to body sensations. A more intense section follows that blends martial arts and dance technique. The class ends with yoga and what is referred to as "floor-play," self-guided stretching on the floor. There is, however, a striking difference between NIA and the old style of aerobics: NIA opens the door to personal expression in the movements and people are really drawn to this.

NIA is an expressive fitness movement program. It blends movements and philosophies from diverse cultures. NIA offers an experience that motivates creativity, individuality, and free expression. It mixes the concentration of tai-chi, the dynamic poses of yoga, the power of martial arts and the grace and the charm of modern and ethnic dance. This way it make it possible to stay fit and achieve a sense of well-being that filters into every aspect of life.

NIA is a mind-body-soul fitness and wellness program, a barefoot infusion of dance, martial arts, yoga, and body integration therapies. NIA is based on organic movements that strengthen, open, re-align, balance, invigorate, and heal the body. Not only does NIA deliver all of the traditional exercise benefits, its magic is that it empowers students to express and nurture all parts of the self, nourishing the inner and outer self, and strengthening students’ commitment.

Creators of NIA

NIA was created by Debbie and Carlos Rosas in 1983. Since them it has became a popular fitness form practiced in spas and gyms in many countries. According to its founders "If you are interested in discovering more about you, about fitness, healing and movement, we offer you the experience of NIA. Used as a tool, NIA will help you to explore life, to grow, expand, learn, and to transform yourself and your professional work".. Approached as a living system, the work and world of NIA is open-ended. Everyone who touches NIA brings their own unique style and approach, making NIA completely adaptable to almost all forms of fitness and healing models. NIA is unique, helping the human spirit, soul, body, mind, and emotions evolve into higher levels of consciousness.

Debbie and Carlos wanted to create a new form of exercise that will be fun and will be a wellness program as well. They were impressed by the health and knowledge of many teachers in the martial arts, yoga, and healing arts, specifically in relationship to human potential.
