I had
heard so much buzz about indoor rock-climbing that I
finally decided to check it out. I had a chance to
visit the Metrorock facility in Everett, MA and here are
my thoughts:
- This workout is best when done in
pairs so go with a partner because otherwise you
will need to find one there and when most people
come with their partner, you maybe out of luck.
- Wear comfortable clothes and
while shoes are available for renting, I suggest
that either you buy your own shoes (I doubted their
hygiene) and bring them or wear disposable socks.
- You simply cannot start climbing
because there is a lot to learn about tying the
knots, putting on the gear, and handling the gear
when you or your partner are engaged in the climb.
Pay attention to the safety instructions and always
follow the safety tips. If you follow these
practices, there is nothing to fear. The
system is very safe.
- Start small, especially if you
are not in perfect health. And even if you are
in great shape, for the first few times, keep it
nice and slow since you will be using muscles that
you may not be using in other workouts and that will
cause some muscle ache.
What did I think?
In my
opinion, if you are serious about losing massive amounts
of weight, the biggest impact will come from diet,
exercise, and lifestyle changes. If this is you,
then, it is better that you become fit first through
simpler exercises like jogging.
If you
are in great health and want to make your workout
regimen even more interesting, indoor rock climbing is
one way to make things interesting because not only will
you burn a lot of calories (rock climbing is often
listed among the top ten exercises that burn the most
calories), you will strengthen muscles and learn a new
skill that can eventually be used outdoors. My
conclusion is that while this is a great workout, since
it may require going to a special place rather than your
own gym, it is best kept as a hobby. |
