How to reverse damage from sleeplessness?
Sarah, a 24-year old from London, went through a very difficult time at work leading to a layoff and then several months of unemployment. With financial difficulties and high level of stress, she could not sleep well for months. “Recently I been developing fine lines under my eyes, and small lines at the corner of my eyes. I also have dark, puffy areas under my eyes, and even though I have been sleeping well lately they are not going away. I also see a few gray hair. Can you recommend anything that I could do about this, and what are my options to reverse the fine lines, and improve the quality of my skin,” she asks.
Let me talk about each issue separately even though they are somewhat related:
Hair: Indeed gray hair at this age are rare. I think you are clearly still stressed out (evident from lack of sleep) and that can cause gray hair. While you can dye your hair, it is important that you get enough sleep. A few things are easy to do to get about 7-8 hours of sleep each day. Try to relax by taking a bath, drink herbal tea, prepare your bedroom so that it is pleasant, and read or listen to relaxing music before sleeping. You may also try to take Melatonin to get your sleep cycle in order. At the same time, find out the reason for your not sleeping well for months and work on it.
Fine lines and bags under the eyes: Very often these are a result of sleeplessness too, but they also can be due to hereditary factors and due to poor care of facial skin. And while sleeping well from here on will not worsen them, you should try to take better care of yourself for a few months and see if there are any changes. While you may be right that even sleeping well is not working for you since the damage is already done and is generally irreversible, with better facial care you may be able to delay your surgery or get better results from it. If you still feel that your problem has not gone away, at that point it might make sense to consult a cosmetic surgeon. Depending on your condition, an eye lift or eyelid surgery along with brow lift might be some procedures to consider. It may also be possible to inject a filler like Restylane – a non-invasive solution to the problem.
