Do underwire bras cause cancer?
Tanya writes, “I have heard that underwire bras are unsafe to wear and that they can cause lumps – even breast cancer. Is this true? If so, is the risk involved great enough to stop wearing this kind of bra?”
This rumor has been around for the longest time but no one seems to have a solid, scientific basis for this. In fact, there is even information out there that wearing any bra is bad. According to the American Cancer Society, however, “There are no scientifically valid studies that show a correlation between wearing bras of any type and the occurrence of breast cancer. Two anthropologists made this association in a book called Dressed to Kill. Their study was not conducted according to standard principles of epidemiological research and did not take into consideration other variables, including known risk factors for breast cancer. There is no other, credible research to validate this claim in any way.”
So in my opinion, just go ahead and use a bra as you have always done. Finally, please make sure that you wear the right size (not big, not small). Get help if you think you may be wearing the wrong size bra.
