Jennifer is a very, very dark skinned African American woman from Florida, as she puts it and she did not think too much before enjoying the sunny days in the sunshine state. “My skin has been very damaged and darkened by the sun now. I try not to go in the sun but it’s inevitable sometimes. However, despite taking precautions, my skin won’t get any lighter. Are there any ways I can lighten my skin safely? I have heard that hydroquinone can kill you, or make you very sick. Can you please help me find a way to lighten my skin? I don’t want to be too light but I definitly want to be lighter than I currently am.”

You are suffering from a condition called hyperpigmentation. Many people who ruthlessly expose their skin to sun may eventually develop skin cancer. As you are already doing, avoid the sun to the extent possible and when you do go out, always wear sunscreen, dress in long sleeves, and use a parasol. If you drive, you can laminate your car windows with Llumar UVShield. These steps will prevent further damage.

How to undo the damage?

Hydroquinone is a controversial drug and is banned in France due to fear that it may cause cancer but most people can use it in low concentrations without any adverse side effect. I believe that up to 4% solution can be bought without a prescription. However, if you are concerned about its safety, a natural way is to buy fresh aloe-vera and apply the plant extract right on your face. Within three months you will see remarkable improvement. You can also try skin laser treatment.
