Protect your PC for free
In a previous article, we had highlighted the importance of safety for computers and electronic devices. One of the key aspects of having your PC run trouble-free is to have latest antivirus software, firewalls, and keep the adware and spyware softwares away.
These can be major challenges for anyone who does not have a PhD in computer science. Plus, I hate to pay for all the softwares that you have to buy each year – and we are talking big bucks here. It can often add up to hundreds of dollars over the lifetime of a computer.
Can you protect your computer for free?
Yes, Microsoft now has the answer. In an effort to create a new business and compte with the makers of anti virus and firewall softwares, the company is offering two options. I like them because they are easy to use and do a great job. The only people who do not qualify are the ones that are running really old versions of Windows but it is best to check if Microsoft might support it. The ones that are definitely supported are Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000 Server. Here is how it works:
-
If you running the latest versions of Windows, all you need to do is to visit Windows OneCare Live and download the software. Once you are done, there is nothing to worry. Right now the software is free but Microsoft may charge a monthly fee later on. I am very comfortable with that. After all we all understand the importance of keeping the hackers and viruses away.

Now for those of you who do not want to pay anything ever, there is still hope. You can go Live Safety Center and use the web-based tools for free. Since there is nothing running in the background all the time protecting you, you need to visit the website regularly (once a month, Microsoft says) to do a scan and fix the problems, but that is not a big price to pay for getting it all for free.
