This is how
it all started. A
Japanese friend of mine gave us a
gift of this beautiful dishes made in
Kyoto along with a set of chopsticks.
Obviously, we could have used them for anything else but
since we had seen that the
Oga's Restaurant serves
California rolls on them, we
decided to try the recipe at home.
What will you need?
Cooked
Japanese rice, vinegar
(or mirin), nori
or dried sheets of seaweed, and vegetables that you like
to stuff inside. My favorite stuffings are cucumber, avocado,
omelet, though some people also like crab meat.
How to make them?

To the cooked rice, after it has
cooled, add the sushi vinegar and mix it gently.
Now on your sushi mat, put some Saran wrap. Now place a
nori sheet on it and cover it with a thin layer
of rice. Toss whatever fillings you are using. The next
step is a bit tricky but you get better with time. Roll
the sushi mat so that the nori sheet will make a
cylinder and the fillings will be in the center. Gently
lift the cylinder and then slice it into bite size
pieces and decorate them as shown in the photo above. |
