Dosa Temple Indian vegetarian cuisine restaurants
Great
food, great bargain, but not a restaurant to bring your date to
(formerly Chennai Woodlands)
Summary:
If you are a vegetarian or if you like authentic
South Indian cuisine, then Dosa Temple in
Ashland, MA is an option. Like
many other restaurants run by immigrants, the
decor is very simple, the service is
acceptable, but I have serious doubts about
hygiene. When I went, the floor was so dirty
that we almost left.

While
I do not claim to be a vegetarian, I like South Indian
cuisine, which I started to eat at Udupi Bhavan.
Udupi Bhavan used to be in the same location as Chennai Woodlands is now.
Since then Udupi Bhavan has moved out of Ashland and
then Framingham. It seems
that we had the choice of only a buffet, which my wife
was not too excited about since she likes to eat dosas
when she visits a South Indian restaurant. But
after we spoke to the restaurant owner, he let us order
off the menu, which is fairly broad.
Let us
mention that we were the only non-Indians in the
restaurant, which to us is validation of the fact that
the food is authentic. As an Indian gentleman lining up
behind us told us, "It is indeed like eating back
home!"

Despite
the reputation of South Indian food being hot, the taste
here is fairly mild. There are
dishes that you won't really see in many Indian
restaurant.
A word
about the decor. While it is a simple, it is worse
than some of the restaurants that we have seen in India. Plus, cleanliness is
something that more than makes up for other deficiencies
- this restaurant does not pay attention to cleanliness.
So I have warned you - eat with caution.
