Why
do women love boots?
Do
they transform their image by wearing boots?
By Pierre

The
boots are everywhere. If you are in Japan starting fall, you will see them almost everywhere. No matter
what the age of the woman or what her physique, she will be wearing knee high or even slightly higher boots. Combined with the
short skirts that are common in Japan, boots seem to provide good protection
against the cold, it seems. One MYNIPPON
member writes, "I think
Japanese women wear boots since it makes them taller. As many Japanese
people are short, I guess by wearing boots, they feel confident and they don't
care about how others see them. An American woman who lives in Japan and
loves boots, writes, "I am American living in Japan and I totally dig these
boots. The other Americans laugh at me but screw them; it is very
fashionable!!!"

Wearing boots is considered to add quite a bit of attractiveness to Japanese women. While all seem to agree on this point, it is perfectly acceptable to wear these boots to work and even to
professional meetings. Is it acceptable to look so bold in business meetings in Japan? Depends on the situation and the piece of dress that we
are talking about. For instance, fishnet stockings are far more acceptable in Japan
than elsewhere but not enough for business meetings. Akiko, a Japanese
student in England, writes, "I know how cool it looks, especially ones with
sharp high heels. I save them for a party and wear with a
REALLY, REALLY short
skirt (about 10 cm or 4 inches above the tops of my white stocking).
The effect is great: English boys show a lot of interest in me."

As MYNIPPON has been pointing out in other articles, the condition of Japanese
women needs a lot of improvement. The discrimination is rampant and the
number of restrictions imposed on them by men, of course, are
enormous. Boots provide Japanese women with an opportunity
to basically give Japanese men a boot. In a rather subtle manner, using
boots is a way for Japanese woman to express their freedom and demonstrate their
independence. (Related:

28-year old, department store assistant commented, "Boots make me feel
confident when I walk on the road (Dainty
Footings). I have found new identity for myself
since I started using them. I can now walk with a don't care
attitude." These boots are not designed to be extremely comfortable
and despite the high level of technology used to manufacture and exotic
materials, the sheer weight of these
shoes can be a liability by itself.
Hiroko, who is a saleswoman for insurance policies and has
to regularly go out of the office to convince Japanese
housewives to sign up, comments,
"I like to dress cool and my skirts are just long enough to meet my company's
rules. However, with mini
skirts, the boots help me during winter as the
wind can be very cold." So after all these boots do provide comfort.
A lady from Hawaii who has seen a million Japanese women on
vacation there in boots writes, "I think that Japanese women are totally
cool because they are able to actually walk in those things, while I hate having
things like that on me. The boot part makes me too hot and the weather
here sucks, but if the weather was nice, then I would totally wear that kind of
boots myself!" Another lady who uses boots frequently tells MYNIPPON, "Boots help me project an
image of self confidence, angst, and a
great sense of
style. It's very bold and very mysterious to some. Extreme
confidence. To be able to walk in something that big, you *have* to have
confidence. I wear boots a lot myself and it gives you a feeling of power. Women
in boots have power and confidence". (Related:

An American woman, who discovered boots
essentially in Japan tells MYNIPPON, "When I was in Japan last fall, I bought a pair of knee high platform
boots. I think its one of the
best investments I've ever made! Wherever I wear them, heads turn! Wearing these
kinds of things (that few American girls would be daring enough to even walk
in), demands attention. They're very hot!" Jill Longstreet even
proposes that every woman should own at least one pair of boots. She adds,
"I feel powerful and confident when I wear them and men always take notice!
I've had boyfriends that begged me to wear them. Talk about a feeling of power!"
