Using
a scarf as an accessory
Exhibit
beauty, charm, elegance, and power

There are rumors in Japan that some
French and
Japanese women have as many scarves as shoes. This is definitely
considered unusual since women are typically obsessed with shoes and keep
buying them for no reason whatsoever, but why would Japanese women buy so
many scarves. The other interesting part is that while most women
continue using the same two or three pairs of shoes most of the time (since
these are the only ones that are comfortable to use anyway), Japanese women
will use their scarves in a variety of creative ways. If they are
using a see through
dress, then the scarf
helps them cover the top discreetly. If they are cold, then the scarf
provides the necessary warmth for the neck. Hiroko, a Japanese writes,
"I have as many scarves as dresses. I think I am not fully
dressed if I do not have a
scarf around my neck. It serves several
purposes for me - Most men think I look very attractive in a scarf and I get to
play with my scarf in creative ways to attract attention to my body".

Scarves for all
occasions, not just formal ones!
Japanese women, like their dresses, have
scarves for all occasions. While several companies insist on their
women using some kind of neckwear as part of the uniform, during winter,
Japanese women will use scarves to bring a sense of
color. Some of the
European brands such Hermes,
Gucci, and
Fendi are most popular and some of
these scarves can be fairly expensive. The younger women tend to use a
large variety of neck wear and the high-school girls/teenagers have a very
typical design (a checkered
pattern) of a scarf that is seen practically all over the
country.

Why would a scarf be so popular in Japan
despite the fact that it is not really that cold there? MYNIPPON
interviewed several women and we have been told that a scarf helps Japanese
women make a statement. A cute scarf with bright colors and complex
pattern or flowers denotes femininity and confidence in her beauty. A
relatively simple pattern with dull colors is preferable during
serious business meetings. Other more casual neck accessories
symbolize cuteness.
The reaction from non-Japanese women has been identical on why they use
scarves and what designs are appropriate for each occasion, the response has
been different about the frequency. Outside Japan and France, scarves are used
either to protect from cold or to add to the beauty of a dress on a more
formal occasion. MYNIPPON has been told that non-Japanese women will
simply not invest in more than a few scarves and do not feel that they need
to use a scarf other than for a special occasion.
