I think that your mother is a little bit old-fashioned.
This is 21st century and it is OK for
women to ask a guy out rather than wait for him to
act, because in the meantime another
smart girl will do what you are afraid of doing. If
he is as good as you describe, it will be terrible that
some other girl snatches him from you. So just find an
excuse to hang out with him -- it could be an
exhibition at a museum or a new
movie
that you want to watch or a
new
restaurant -- and make it appear as if you just need
someone to do it with you. That way you two will have
plenty of private time together to get to know each
