Black men in Japan

Can he be like anyone else?

Summary:  I got this email from a black male and I am absolutely impressed by his focused passion for Japan.  I am so pleased with all the efforts that Daryl is making to realize his dream. While I will not claim that there is no discrimination against foreigners in Japan, I do not have an answer if African Americans are discriminated more than others.

I have seen dozens of Japanese girls dating African Americans and I see no reason why Daryl could not succeed.

Your beauty has truly smitten me. The beauty I speak of though is not your outward beauty because you have chosen to keep that somewhat hidden, but your inner beauty - your heart. It's refreshing to see someone so willing to open up her heart and soul to other people.

I admire your ability to connect emotionally and maintain meaningful relationships with so many people. It seems to me that it would take an awful lot of energy - both emotional and intellectual. That is amazing to me.

My fascination with Japan stems from having lived there for 8 years and visiting off and on for 4 more years while in college. Now I can't get enough of all things Japan. I regret having wasted the time that I had in Japan and hope to travel back there and live someday.

That is my dream, to live and completely immerse myself in the culture. I'm striving to nurture my love for Japan by having as much contact with Japan as I can. I strive to have some sort of meaningful contact with Japan everyday.

The Internet has been an excellent tool for accomplishing that. But I want to experience the real Japan, not the stereotypical view of Japan that is presented in the West. It saddens me when I encounter those stereotypes during conversations with my friends and co-workers. I do my best to correct their perceptions of Japan based on my experience there and what I've learned through my research of the "REAL" Japan.
Another dream of mine, in addition to moving to Japan, is falling in love with a Japanese woman and getting married. I wonder though if this dream is possible. I am an African-American. I've heard from friends (non-Japanese) that there is a negative perception of blacks in Japanese culture. I never experienced this while I lived in Japan.

My Japanese friends were accepting of me and treated my like anybody else. But I never had a Japanese girlfriend. Is this negative perception of blacks something that exists in the Japanese culture today, especially among the younger generation closer to your age and mine or is it something that existed with the older generation? Do you think a Japanese woman could see past that and be willing see and get involved with the real me?
