Fashion and style in Singapore
Heavily influenced by Japanese popular designs

What happens when you are so fascinated by Japanese culture that you completely transform your appearance to look like a Japanese woman?  Most of you would say that this lady should be allowed to pursue her dreams and do whatever she wishes.  However, depending on where you live it may not always be possible.  Several MYNIPPON fans are in such countries as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Jordan where there is only limited access to the Internet and even more restrictions on how you can dress and behave.

But here is the surprising part – you would not believe that this lady lives in one of the most developed countries in the world – Singapore.  MYNIPPON is proud to feature Loletta Michelle – a young lady from Singapore who exemplifies what a Japan lover may have to go through.  As a teenager she got hooked to Japanese culture – primarily fashion trends of girls her age.  As she grew she realized that Japanese women were far more fashionable and adventurous than she could ever be.  While all her peers were trying to fit into the rigid, conservative social structure, she rebelled and decided to pursue her own dreams.  (Related: Maria Gara)

Following Japanese styles

She got into a lot of trouble just for dressing up like a Japanese model.  Considering how safe Japan is where you would not get into trouble at all for dressing even in the most provocative manner, Loletta can not even dress like an average Japanese woman.  When she published some of her photos on the Internet, she became an object of attention, and of course, a ton of gossip in the Image of Loletta Michelle of Singapore wearing a white blouse. Singaporean media.  This was not something that a decent Singaporean woman is supposed to do!  She should try to find a job, worry about money, dress like everyone else in simple, elegant style and get married to live happily thereafter.

It appears that other than the confines of the bedroom, Singaporeans are leading extremely dull and boring lives, according to Loletta.  Loletta decided to challenge the status quo and took some suggestive and naughty photographs that she published on her website.  MYNIPPON recently interviewed Loletta and here are excerpts from her interview:

MYNIPPON: How did your fascination with Japan start?

Loletta:  I was introduced to J-POP and that changed my life.  Then to pursue my interests, I started surfing a lot of Japanese websites.  This research paid off – I realized what I was missing out on.  The Japanese girls were having a great time and they definitely knew how to dress.  I was impressed by the photography and the artistic approach Japanese photographers have.  This interest in Japan inspired me to become the Singaporean version of a model.  I am not sure if I will ever be able to but I am trying.

MYNIPPON:  What do you like about Japanese women?

Loletta:  Above all, I like their sense of fashion.  These women know what they are doing and take care of the details.  Unlike a lot of other Singaporean girls, I was born a little bit dark and thus I can follow the ganguro style.  Also following the trend in Japan, I have dyed my hair blonde.

MYNIPPON:  What part of Japanese fashion has put you in trouble?

Loletta:  I am simply in love with the Japanese schoolgirl outfit - especially the loose socks and pleated skirts, not exactly the way Brooke Hogan wears it, but close enough.  In Singapore, for someone my age, this outfit is absolutely scandalous.  Other girls give me such a hard time.  I have been accused of being childish when I dress like a schoolgirl.  Of course, as I get older, it is becoming harder for me to dress in this outfit and I even feel awkward sometimes.  Also, the local fashion scene does not allow me to do it.  The fashion in Singapore is more traditional – the kind that makes you feel like an old English lady.  (Related article:  Role play as a schoolgirl)

MYNIPPON:  What other Japanese fashions attract you?

Loletta:  I LOVE boots and I always wear them even though it is so hot here.  If only there were winter in Singapore!  I have mine specially ordered from overseas.  I also like scarves and pullovers, which I think Japanese women know how to use and bring out the best in their bodies.  Though a lot of my fans will find it bizarre, but I actually would love to dress in a kimono – it is so neat, so inviting.  I wanted to take a picture wearing a kimono and just let it slide off my shoulders but since I do not have one, I had to do it with a blouse.  Now all this is not fashionable here – the college girls wear only plain T-shirts and jeans.  The fashionable club going types are into spaghetti straps, 3/4 pants or jeans or sometimes tube top and pants.  Mini-skirts, which seem to be everywhere in Japan, are an absolute no-no here.  Working women wear mostly jackets and knee-length skirts.  The colors here are also dull – it’s all black or white with an occasional dark blue.  Pink, green or shocking yellow are never seen around here. You can say that Singapore fashion is rather boring and lifeless.  Girls here are not adventurous.

MYNIPPON:  If you know Japanese women are rather colorful and their favorite color seems to be pink.  What about you?

Loletta:  In terms of clothes, my favorite colors are white and navy blue.  I like pink for wallpaper, cell phone casing, and furniture.  I do not like pink lingerie as Japanese women do.  Since I am tanned, I also love white lingerie.
