How to reduce your paper consumption?

I started to talk about reusing paper before.  There is so much waste of paper, maybe because it is cheap.  Paper creates clutter and it is not an environmentally friendly way to handle it.  These are some ideas to reduce your paper consumption.

  1. Avoid printing anything unnecessary.  You can create electronic files, they are easier to organize, retrieve and preserve.  Be sure you always have back ups of your computer.
  2. Use both sides of paper to print.
  3. Avoid using scratch pads.  I love the cute versions; it is tempting for me not to buy them, but they create clutter and waste money.  Create your own scratch paper from envelopes or one side printed-paper.
  4. Avoid stickies.  They are handy, but it is easy to abuse their use.
  5. Use electronic cards especially for Christmas.  If you have to buy cards get the ones made with recycled paper.
  6. Read books and magazines from the library, when possible.  When you are done with a magazine, bring it to your local library, as I do, rather than throwing it in the recycle bin.  Many libraries sell these magazines for a quarter or so to raise funds and someone else gets to read a magazine for a very low price.
  7. Pay bills electronically.  It not only saves paper but is also a great way to pay bills on time.
  8. Teach your kids to be mindful of paper.  Paper is a resource; it comes from trees and pollutes the environment.  It is not to be wasted.
