Radiation from kitchen countertops

The New York Time has an article about granite countertops emitting radiation. Apparently some varieties of granite, specially the exotic version of granites from Brazil and Namibia can contain uranium, thorium and other radioactive materials.
According to the article, the emissions are very low compared to other radiation we are always exposed to, such as natural radiation and man made radiation from such devices as smoke detectors and cell phones.
Apparently Uranium decomposes emitting radon gas – the dangerous material that may cause lung cancer. Perhaps not a serious threat, but worth considering if you are thinking of remodeling your kitchen. There are granites with lower levels of the toxic materials. Just ask this question while buying it.
