When I wrote about the Japanese female body, I reported that Japanese women do not get fat, or at least so the experts said. After all the Japanese women followed a weight loss diet at all times. I also learned that Japanese women were obsessed with being slim and aspired to have the Japanese perfect body. Not so any more, it seems. According to fashion guru Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel, “I noticed that people became bigger than before because now they eat more cake and sweets and things like this that they didn’t do in the past. There’s a real change in the look of the Japanese people. Normally, before, they were all tiny. It’s the kind of beauty you get from junk food.” And indeed, according to data from the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 20% of Japanese are “obese” — a threefold increase from 1962 to 2002.
