Nell movie review

It would not be an exaggeration to say that I will watch any movie starring Jodie Foster, simply for her acting talent.  So when I found out that she was actually also nominated for an Oscar, I made it a point to watch this one.  Another reason, I chose to watch the film was that a very close family member suffers from some mental disabilities, the way Jodie Foster does in the film.

Nell was found by a cop and doctor in the woods of North Carolina when they went to investigate the death of her mother.  Unfortunately, her mother reminded me of Ted Kaczynski, because they had absolutely no contact with civilization.  Since her mother had suffered a series of strokes and was paralyzed, her speech had deteriorated, so Nell learned to speak like her and developed a language of her own.

The movie follows the efforts of Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson to introduce her to civilization and keep her out of a mental institution or become a research candidate for the medical community.  It is a gripping tale of human endurance and what makes us who we are.

Strongly recommended for fans of psychological dramas.
