One the heels of watching the French movie Paris and recognizing what a great actor Romain Duris (like Pierre there, he is Paul here going through another painful experience) is, I ran into Dans Paris (In Paris). The story is about a Parisian family dealing with pain in several corners: divorce, suicide by a 17-year old, and breakup of Paul and Anna (Joana Preiss). Paul is devastated and goes into severe depression, but his womanizing brother Jonathan (Louis Garrel) lives a worry-free life and the two brothers are able to provide a support mechanism to each other.
Dans Paris is yet another of those French films that do not provide conventional entertainment but it is a masterpiece if you enjoy French cinema that provides intellectual stimulation more often than Hollywood does. Guy Marchand and Marie-France Pisier act as parents and while the movie is not about them, they help provide a perspective into the challenges of a family. Strongly recommended.
If you have the patience, you might also enjoy this brief clip from the film in which Paul and Anna sing to each other after they have broken up. The lyrics are very poetic and their beauty is not captured in English translation, but I just want you to enjoy the voices and music.
