As a kid I was a fan of detective novels and read books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in which Sherlock Holmes was as good as Hercule Poirot (the main character in Agatha Christie books, another set of my favorite books as a teenager) in solving crimes that seemed almost impossible to solve. Naturally, I was attracted to the movie, considering that both Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law are excellent actors and I have enjoyed their movies in the past. And exactly as I had expected, Downey delivered.
The movie revolves around Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) who is caught while trying to murder a girl as part of his black magic rituals. While he is sentenced to death, he manages to come back from the dead and terrorize Londoners by engaging in even more murders so that they can dominate the world with the help of a secret organization called the Temple of the Four Orders. With the help of his friend Dr. John Watson (Jude Law), it is Sherlock Holmes’ task to catch — yet once again — Blackwood, which they do and this time he is executed perfectly.
The movies is very well made and is highly entertaining for anyone who likes detective and mystery movies, though, I kept thinking that Sherlock Holmes often comes across as the 19th century version of James Bond. Strongly recommended.
