Albert Camus The Fall book review

In my France Discovery Project this is the second book I have read after The Stranger.  Not only had I read The Stranger before, it is also an easier read.  The Fall is a bit more difficult and complicated to read because it is not as simple a story.

The book is a monologue from Jean-Baptiste Clamence, a French attorney, who is sitting in a bar in Amsterdam and talking to another patron (that is, the reader) about his life.  As one discovers in The Stranger, life on the planet is about being two-faced.  And that is not just like the politicians, but also each one of us, who are forced to be something else every moment of our lives, just to go on with our lives.  The reason is simple: if we engaged in the behavior that we really want to and say the things that we want to, there is nothing but trouble.

The book is a confession from Clamence in which he speaks of his dishonesty and hypocrisy.  It is a book that forces you to look at the way in which sell our souls every day just to be able to get along with people around us.  Strongly recommended.
