In America there are two types of Japanese restaurants. The first ones are ‘Japanese food for Americans” types and that includes the likes of Katsuya or Nobu. The second ones are ‘Japanese food for connoisseurs,’ and that includes places like Gonpachi.
I would put this East Village (Little Japan neighborhood) restaurant in the second category because it is as if they lifted a piece of Japan and transported it to New York City. It is as authentic as eating at robatayaki restaurant in Japan. This is essentially a form of grilling popular in Japan and you can enjoy it at dinner time.
Lorena and I instead went for lunch and enjoyed obento meals. She had the miso cod while I tried a tempura set. Both meals come with miso shiru, pickles, and other condiments. Strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys authentic food.
