Sandy
writes, "I just
want more all the time. I am
insatiable
and it applies to everything in life, starting from
money to
professional success to
happiness. The problem is that wanting more and
achieving is
not making me happy at all. Actually I might even
be miserable because when life does not turn out my
way, I get frustrated, angry, and
unhappy. What to do?"
What
I have concluded is that I am wasting my time if having
more of anything
does not make me happy. I have
more money in the bank now that 10 years ago and it
makes me
feel a bit more secure about the future, but NOT
necessarily happy. My wife and I also concluded that
if we both
worked from home, we really did not need 2
cars, even though most of our friends have 3
cars. I also concluded that all those honors and
awards are pretty meaningless because when you come home
after receiving them you feel nothing after some time
and that means I try to
focus on spiritual satisfaction rather than winning
accolades. I would rather spend a
weekend in the mountains hiking with my wife than to
win yet another honor. So think about it a bit more
because I really want you to recognize that this
philosophy of 'more, more.....' leads to nothing but
misery. The more you
simplify your life and use some of the
Zen
philosophy, the
happier you will be. |
