In a previous
article we had discussed the relationships between
African American men and Japanese women. In several
other instances, we have analyzed the their relationships
with foreigners -
Japanese girlfriend and
Japanese boyfriend. What is a relatively less studied
area is - relationships of Black women and
Japanese guys.

And
that is exactly what prompted Ricky to write to us when
she could not find any information on the web. She is
planning to
move to Japan to work for
video games company. She didn't indicate if she is
moving there to really work, or is it because of as she
puts it "I am also in love with
Japanese men. I have no idea if the men there have any
interest in someone like me. I really would love to find
out
how Japanese men feel about African American women."
Indeed, the
number of Japanese men/African American women
interracial couples is miniscule. A major reason is
that the total number of African American women who choose
to go to Japan, live there long-term,
learn the language, and
seek a
relationship is extremely small. In other words, the
data is simply not available, though we have heard from
several couples in the past. |
 As you
must have already read on our website, the number of
Japanese
men dating non-Japanese women is also a very tiny
percentage but some men are definitely curious about
gajin women. Many are afraid of their language
skills, others are
plain shy,
and some do not even believe that non- Japanese women may
even be interested in them. However, I have seen all kinds
of women (Caucasians,
Latinas,
Asians, and African Americans) being dated by them. What
I would suggest, therefore, is that once you get
there, treat Japanese
men
like you would treat any other men - show your
interest,
flirt, and
approach them for a date. I have also found
that, contrary to expectations, Japanese men not
only like you to take the initiative, they also
want you to since they are not just ready to make
a move on a gaijin. (Related:

I
have also found that at a fundamental level, these
men are no different than any one of us. So if you
be yourself, you will do just fine. At the end of
the day, romance is about two unique people in the
world. It doesn't matter what ideas people had
before they met that special someone that clicked
with them.
