What can we learn from TWO-MIX?    ------
By Eimi Graham

I have been mesmerized by the innovative fashion style of the Japanese dance music duo TWO-MIX.  What I am writing about is mostly the fashion on the CD jackets, and as anyone can notice her style has evolved over the years.  In fact, studying this evolution is a good analogy for the overall Japanese fashion style.  In Japan it is so common to follow the styles used by celebrities, that one has to simply study a selected group of celebrities to figure out what everyone else is likely to embrace.  (Related:  Celebrity gossip)

Some Japanese celebrities change their hairstyles and styles of clothing a lot more than the Hollywood celebrities and these changes are dramatic.  The R&B singer Hikaru Utada used to have black hair and thick eyebrows when she debuted.  Now, she has brown hair and more stylish eyebrows.  The member of a rock band in Japan changes his hair color frequently, usually black or bleached blond.  Some men go from very long to short hair.  Some simply change their styles of clothing.  Let me explain that by taking a few examples.  (Related article:  Hollywood fashion and style)

Let us take Minami Takayama as an example.  She is a voice actress and singer/composer of the Japanese dance music duo TWO-MIX.  Listed below is the clothing (for information purposes Minami is 156 cm or 5’2” tall, and her vitals stats are 78/56/82 cm or 31/22/33 inches) she wore on the covers of the CDs.  Notice the change from the album "BPM 132" to the album "BPM 143" and beyond!

Situation

Hairstyle

Clothing

Before "BPM 132"

Black, long hair tied in a ponytail

White sleeveless, long dress and white sandals (low heels)

After "BPM 143"

Light brown hair (shorter than BPM 132), and hair is flipped towards the outside

Light purple tight T-shirt, vinyl white micro mini skirt, white vinyl gloves (She is also wearing a ring with a blue marble on top), white shimmery stockings and white go-go boots (the heels are about 5~7 cm)

After "BPM 143" (another picture inside the album)

Blonde wig; but otherwise same hairstyle

Sleeveless vinyl white shirt, vinyl jacket (the color is clear) and the same stockings and boots

 "BPM 150"

Brown hair tied in a bun

Black leather (probably fake) jacket, black leather (fake again) pants and black boots (heels about 5~7 cm)

"Dream Tactix"

Light brown hair with layers in it and it’s semi-long

Camisole dress that's just above the knee, and jacket on top

"Dream Tactix"

(Other pictures in the album)

Hair tied up in a bun

  1. Vinyl black camisole with jacket on top and black leather (probably fake) pants
  2. White tube top mini dress, jacket on top, white pants underneath and white boots (heels about 6~8 cm)

"Rhythm Formula"

Reddish-brown hair, longer than those in "Dream Tactix"

Pink shirt, purplish vinyl jacket, dark purple pants, black boots (heels about 5~7 cm) and a pendant with animal fetish

"Rhythm Generation"

Dark brown hair tied up in ponytail

Lime green tight T-shirt and lime green vinyl micro mini skirt (because of the computer graphics on the cover, you can't see what shoes she is wearing)

"Last impression"

Light brown, semi-long hair

Dark colored camisole, black vinyl jacket, black vinyl micro mini skirt, fishnet stockings and black go-go boots (heels maybe around 10 cm)

"Truth"

Orange brown hair tied in pigtails

Beige jacket, navy blue vinyl micro mini skirt and boots

In a magazine article

Camisole, jacket, micro mini skirt, boots and a cowboy hat

The ad for the single "Truth".

She was wearing something similar to the cover. She was wearing a black jacket instead of the beige jacket.

On a radio program

When she was on the radio a couple years ago, the DJ said that her clothes were cute. The DJ described to the listeners what she was wearing – a white vinyl jacket, white micro mini skirt and white go-go boots

On the puzzle (you got it if you bought a TWO-MIX CD at one time)

Black camisole, a jacket on top that almost exposes her front, dark blue pants, dark blue "cool" stockings and platform sandals (heels about 12~15 cm)

The style of Minami tells us two things – one, we Japanese can change fairly rapidly when it comes to new styles, and two, we are increasingly dressing prettier than just a few years ago.  Finally, what defines our style does not change much – we focus on hair, boots, stockings (and legs generally exposed through micro-mini skirts), and fake stuff.
