Cosmetic surgery in Brazil
Discussing more about plastic surgery abroad, there are several choices, depending on your individual situation. I have discussed Mexico as an option for surgery in the past and let me discuss Brazil this time as a choice. I have also learned that Argentina is an excellent location for plastic surgery and American patients are going there – at least those that do not mind the long flight.
But Brazil is much closer, particularly if you are in the south. Now let us compare the popularity of plastic surgery in US and Brazil. In the US, during 2004, as many as 1.7 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed. In Brazil, approximately 400,000 procedures are performed and it has a population of about 186 million. It is not easy to compare both the numbers since the American Society of Plastic Surgery and Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery include different procedures in their calculations but it is fact that Brazil has a very high rate of plastic surgery per capita.
What is interesting though is that about half the procedures are done for aesthetic reasons. Now that is no surprise considering the size of Brazilian thongs and bikinis. Another reason that makes Brazilian plastic surgeons more appealing is that the country is ethnically very diverse and that gives doctors a lot of expertise in operating on people of different body types and skin colors – two things that can make a big difference.
And according to news reports, cosmetic surgeons in Brazil undergo rigorous training and certification despite the fact that some American doctors (for competitive reasons) may often criticize non-American doctors by calling them poorly trained or using questionable medical techniques. So my advice is that do your research before picking a Brazilian clinic but it is definitely something to think about.
