Right age for breast reduction surgery
Monica, who is just 16 years of age and weighs a meager 105 lbs, has 32 E bust. “I don’t understand how my three sisters and my mom have B cups while I look like a freak. I workout everyday, eat healthy, but I just don’t understand why my breasts so large. My mom says I have to wait till I turn 18 to get breast reduction plastic surgery done, but isnt there anything else I can do?” she asks.
Indeed, her case is very unusual. The reason is probably a bit more complex – a combination of genetics and environment. However, if she is otherwise healthy and normal in every other way, while rare, exceptionally large breasts can still grow on some women. While most plastic surgeons want women to wait till they are 18 for breast enlargement (the American Association of Plastic Surgeons has adopted guidelines for its members that do not allow implant procedures to be performed for anyone below 18 for purely cosmetic reasons), it is probably not necessary to wait that long for breast reduction surgery.
There is another point you need to understand and that is about your final growth. Since you are probably still growing (most girls grow till about 19-20) the doctor needs to make that determination by examining you and looking at your individual situation. She might very well suggest that you may have to wait till you are fully developed or if she thinks that you are fully developed, might suggest the surgery somewhat sooner. Ask your mother to bring you to a plastic surgeon for consultation rather than wait if large breasts are cause for pain and limit your ability to play sports. According to the ASPS, women with large, pendulous breasts may experience problems such as skin irritation, skeletal deformities, breathing problems, pain, headaches, and bra-strap indentations in the shoulders. In addition to that she may also suffer from low self esteem and fail to have normal social life. (Related: Breast reduction surgery for women of color)
Breast mammaplasty surgery is increasingly popular now as awareness has grown after celebrities like Queen Latifah and Drew Barrymore underwent the procedure. Despite this though the greedy insurance companies in America refuse to cover breast reduction surgery. In other words, while you should try to push your carrier to pay for the procedure, you must plan on spending your own money (a few thousand dollars).
