Are you waiting for silicone implants?

As we have reported before, the FDA is moving forward with reintroduction of silicone gel implants in the United States. A recent study on gummy bear implants actually shows very positive results on women who are participating in the trial. Would you be surprised if women were delaying their breast augmentation decision because of likely availability of silicone implants? I was, though. If Mentor Corp – the maker of silicone implants – is to be believed, then because women are “delaying breast augmentation surgery to wait for U.S. regulators to approve the company’s silicone gel-filled breast implants.”

What should you do?

While a lot of progress has been made towards an approval, it is to be remembered that there is still a lot of opposition to silicone implants. Not all experts are convinced about their safety. The other thing to note is that it can take years for FDA to act and at any point even a final decision can be delayed indefinitely. Just see what happened to the Plan B decision.

So if you want to have breast augmentation done, it might be worthwhile to just go ahead and do it. In case the silicone implants do become commercially available eventually, when you get around to having a second procedure, you can then replace them.
