Rising popularity of cosmetic surgery as gift

We had talked earlier about plastic surgery procedures being given away as gifts – something that is picking up popularity after spa gift certificates became highly popular among elites this year.

But how big is this trend? Numbers are hard to come by but in a survey of surgeons completed by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, as many as half of them said that they have consulted with patients who received plastic surgery as a gift from a loved one. This was up from one in three in 2001. Dr. Linda Li, who is often seen on the reality program Dr. 90210, is quoted by the New York Times as saying that she has seen as many as 30 patients in a month who got a gift of surgery.

So apart from Botox parties and cosmetic surgery bachelorette parties, we are also seeing cosmetic procedures getting into the mainstream culture by becoming part of the holiday gift-giving scene. Did you watch the episode of “Nip/Tuck” in which Santa Claus offers a breast augmentation procedure to Circe – an elf? I was clearly surprised by the proposal. And how do the producers of the show defend using Santa Claus this new job for Santa? In the New York Times, Sean Jablonski defends it by saying, “We have a desperate need to get our flat screen TV’s, our updated electronics, our liposuction and our breast implants to keep up with the lives of the rich and famous.”
