Cosmetic surgery in Venezuela
I have talked separately about plastic surgery in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. But apart from that there are two other countries in Latin America that seem to be the “pioneers” in this area: Colombia and Venezuela.
In an excellent AP article, here are some statistics that caught my attention:
- There are more beauty salons and spas than drugstores in Caracas.
- A popular cosmetic surgery gift for “quinceanera” (a celebration when a girl reaches the age of 15) is a breast augmentation job.
- Women in Venezuela beat every other Latina when it comes to cosmetics.
- It seems that Venezuela dominates the world in beauty pageant contestants. The country can claim to have as many as four Miss Universe, five Miss World and four Miss International titles. Plus, many contestants reach very close to winning the title. No surprise then that the most popular program on television is a beauty pageant. Former Miss Universe Irene Saez became a mayor and almost the president of the country in 1998 (many analysts believe that if she was not contesting against Hugy Chavez, she would have won).
This means that Venezuela is also a popular destination for inexpensive plastic surgery where surgeons have a lot of good practice with different skin colors, but you might want to take the security situation in the country into consideration before getting on a flight to Caracas.
