Gastric bypass surgery means longer life
While gastric bypass surgery has its risks and is not for everyone, it also has its benefits. For some people, that is the only solution for rapid weight loss. New research shows that this weight loss also increases their lifespan. In other words, early death is guaranteed without obesity surgery. No surprise then that Medicare now covers this procedure and Australia is considering this procedure for obese teenagers.
A study by Australia’s Monash University has found that after 12 years, those who had the surgery had lost about half of their excess weight, and were 73% less likely to have died prematurely. The patients in the study underwent a procedure known as laproscopic gastric banding.
