Neurological side effect of gastric bypass surgery

It should not come as a surprise to you that gastric bypass surgery (a form of weight loss surgery carried out by a plastic surgeon) has risks (and benefits, of course), more than almost all other cosmetic procedures. This does not mean that you should not have it. Actually, massive weight loss is possible only with the help of bariatric surgery, as it is sometimes called.

Latest research shows that this procedure can result in a vitamin deficiency that may lead to loss of memory and other problems with your brain – the syndrome is called Wernicke encephalopathy. The most common sign that you are going to have this syndrome is frequent vomiting during one to three months after you come home. There is a strong chance that your surgeon may not be aware of this problem so it doesn’t hurt to ask. And if you are vomiting more than normal, stay in touch with your clinic.
