Using elastin to stay young

Elastin is a fibrous scleroprotein found in elastic tissues such as the walls of arteries. Along with collagen, it is one of the principal components of human skin. Elastin holds cells together into tissues and provides natural support and flexibility. The absence of elastin in wounds directly leads to the formation of scar tissue. When we age, we are essentially losing our elastin and collagen. In previous articles, we have provided you information on how you can get collagen injections to rejuvenate your skin, but this time let me talk about a new product that also allows you to get your elastin.

A company called Dermaplus has developed Dermalastyl-B (or beta) that contains an ingredient called Elastatropin that is made from “Tropoelastin,” a precursor to human elastin that replicates the human genetic sequence for elastin. Many attempts have been made to utilize elastin as a component of cosmetic products. The materials previously sold as elastin in cosmetics came from animals such as cows, and bear a greater resemblance to beef stew than to native elastin. Through an exclusive process, Dermaplus produces an exact replica of human elastin in transgenic micro-organisms and plants.

Dr. Burt Ensley, the brain behind the product, says, “The most advanced cosmetics sold today, such as Olay Regenerist and Strivectin contain peptides that are combinations of six amino acids at best. Tropoelastin is a complex chain of over 600 amino acids.” He says that products containing Tropoelastin can be an alternative to Botox injections since some patients do not like the idea of injections. They also can be used with Botox to allow formation of new wrinkle-free skin in the area deadened by the toxic injections. More importantly, the products can replenish sufficient elastin to significantly slow or prevent the process of facial sagging. Used properly, they can reduce the need for cosmetic surgery to tighten the skin, and extend the life of previous surgery.

It is too early to comment on what the results will be since this is such a new product with practically no customer feedback but the research conducted by the company showed promising results. So I would recommend that when you use this product, understand that like any other cosmetic product, you need to see if it works for you.
