Insurace coverage for male breast reduction surgery
Try getting a penny out of a health insurance company for any plastic surgery whatsoever, even what is recommended by your physician. It is not uncommon for insurers to deny coverage (though Medicare now pays for gastric bypass surgery) for procedures like gastric bypass or breast reduction, both that are medically necessary in most cases.
In a new ruling, however, the insurance companies may have to change their policies. An appeals court in New York has ruled that Group Health Inc. (GHI) must pay for breast reduction surgery of a 17-year old’s gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts, commonly called moobs). While this is not a common condition, men who do have it, have low self esteem and cannot engage in any physical activity in public that requires them to take off their shirts. Many also find it difficult to have a relationship. The net result is that they cannot lead normal lives.
If you are undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure that is recommended by your doctor, do not give up if your insurer refuses to pay. It makes sense to hire an attorney at that time.
