Breast reduction surgery or lose weight?

Margaret writes, “I’m a 32H in my chest, 5’2″ tall and weigh 145 pounds. I’ve weighed by breasts individually and they are both about 7.5 pounds each. Am I morbidly obese or is it just because of my size? How do I know when it is that I should get a breast reduction procedure? My parents disagree but it hurts my back and sometimes I can’t breathe. What should I do?”

If you use this BMI calculator, you will find out that you are essentially just a bit overweight.

Now, as it happens to some women, your breasts are obviously very big and that is why the back pain and breathing problem. Some women can have extremely large breasts but not be obese and you are like them. I think you should meet with a doctor to discuss if breast reduction is right for you because chances are that if you do lose some weight through diet and exercise, your breasts will shrink too and you will be able to breathe better and have less pain. I am thinking about 10-20 lbs would make a huge difference to your health. Like your parents, I am not a big fan of surgery as the first line of attack. All surgeries have risks. Ideally, I would like you to make lifestyle changes so that you will become a healthier person and thus have fewer diseases later on and live longer.
