“Healthy Living From the Inside Out” by Mariel
Hemingway
A review

Mariel
Hemingway, the grand daughter of Ernest Hemingway is, as
you know, an actress and former model - reminds me of
Carol Alt. She is also a follower of a very
healthy lifestyle. She does
yoga and meditation every day and eats a
healthy diet. Now Mariel is sharing her secrets in
her book “Healthy Living From The Inside Out.”
Healthy
Living has a 4-week plan to start a healthy lifestyle.
The plan has four sections:
eating,
working out, meditation (silence) and
home. The book details a plan for each week covering
all the sections. |

In the eating part
Mariel does not give a specific
diet. She shares some nutrition information and only some
foods are discouraged, such as coffee, alcohol,
chocolate,
breads, candy,
icecream, and chips. She is not a big fan
of any
grains either and discourages their use saying that
eating veggies,
fruits,
and lean
protein is better (sounds like the
Zone diet). But it is a doable program to introduce the
reader to
healthier foods. Moderation is perhaps easier and
healthier than the plan Mariel proposes. |

The
chapters on
exercise discuss the current trends and
disadvantages and she encourages practicing
yoga every day. The book also has a basic
yoga routine.
In
the silence or meditation section, she discusses many
types of meditations and has advice on how to slow down,
live in the present, and appreciate silence.
The
last part is about home or
creating a personal space that is relaxing and
functional. |

In general, it is
a well-written book with good practical advice. Some of the
advice maybe somewhat difficult for busy people, but if you
are looking to be more relaxed and
eating healthier, this is a good book to get started. As
in any book, there are areas that you may not like. For
example, sometimes the book sounds too “new age,” and may turn
off if you do not appreciate some of the tenets of this
lifestyle, but it has a lot of good information presented in
an easy-to-follow manner. |
