How to stop identity theft?
Over 25 million veterans had their private information (names, birth dates and Social Security numbers) stolen recently and it was the US Government that was responsible for the carelessness. You can imagine the nightmare that these people will have to go through now to fight identity theft.
Identity theft instances are rapidly growing and if you do not take simple steps to protect your information, someone out there will do irreparable damage to your credit.
So what can you do to protect your identity?
- Watch for suspicious activity on all your accounts, particularly credit cards. If you see any charge that does not look familiar, rather than just assuming that it was a family member, you better investigate if it were not a charge by a crook.
- Buy a paper shredder and destroy all junk mail that includes your name and address. Be particularly careful about credit card and other offers.
- Do not use your social security number when you don’t have to.
- Read your credit report regularly.
- Keep an eye on your online banking or online trading accounts.
- You can also sign up for credit monitoring services which are quite inexpensive.
