Tips on banking services for students
As students head to college, both they and their parents need to think about a whole bunch of things and here we will address them one by one. In this article, let us talk about checking accounts and other banking services.
Since students have somewhat different needs than other adults, it makes sense to work with a bank that understands that it is dealing with students. It is even better if the bank has a specialized offering for students. Generally a branch on the campus or close to it is much better. If you choose to stay with the bank you currently have, remember that if this bank does not have an ATM and/or branch on campus, the ATM fees can quickly add up.
Another aspect to explore is the option for online banking. Generally, online banking means that the fees will be lower, particularly if you decide not to receive paper copies of the statements.
Since students often keep only small amounts in their banks, they may not meet the qualifications for free banking. Or in other words, a monthly fee. In that case it might make sense that the parents have a joint account that either one can access but the minimum balance for waiving the fee is not to be touched. That money is there to merely keep the account fee-free.
Banks may sometimes offer extra services if you open an account with them. For instance, better offers for credit cards and if you build a relationship with the bank during college years, that relationship comes in handy when you get a job and want to finance your home or car.
