Reality of job losses

Yes, the unemployment stats are horrible but it doesn’t hit you until you meet someone who is suffering. A good friend who used to service computers for a Fortune 500 company was laid off and now makes a living chopping trees during summer and blowing snow during winter.

Another case

I just bought a new entertainment center to replace a rather humble TV stand that I bought used for $10 over 12 years ago. It was an eyesore for me. Instead of selling things like these that are no use to me but are still in good condition, I like to give them away. Within minutes of posting it on Craig’s List (I use Amazon to sell used books, CD, and other small items that are cheap to ship), a gentleman drove over an hour to pick it up so that his son could put his TV on it. As we started to chat, he told me that he was laid off by Intel (he is an electronics engineer) in 2006 and since then he has been working at Market Basket, a supermarket in the area.
