Silicone breast implants on way to approval

The FDA has issued an approvable letter to Mentor Corporation for their application for silicone gel filled breast implants. The agency would not discuss the specifics since the American laws do not allow it to do so. Due to safety concerns in the past about silicone breast implants, they were not allowed except for rare cases of reconstructive plastic surgery. "For more than a decade, choices for women seeking breast augmentation and reconstruction have been limited," said Mr. Joshua Levine, president and CEO of Mentor Corporation. "If ultimately approved by the FDA, Mentor's Memory Gel(TM) breast implants will be a significant additional option for these women.
