As part
of my
France Discovery project, I have been surfing all
kinds of pages on the web in hopes of
developing a
better understanding of French culture. It was on
one of those online adventures, that I discovered this
video: Station Balnéaire. Obviously, it caught my
attention because it was not something that came out of
France of
Quebec or any of the former colonies of
France, but out of
India
(though the film is a production out of Canada). A little research showed me
that France once had a colony in
India and there are a
few Indians in the south who are
influenced by the
language, culture, and
cuisine. French is also a popular
foreign language to study as a hobby.
So
this short film -- I do not understand or speak French
-- is about a French guy (for some reasons he looks very
geeky unlike most French men I know) who is trying to
woo an Indian girl (similarly she
dressed in a very
traditional sari like outfit and my understanding is
that most modern Indian girls do not dress like this
everyday) but her father apparently is opposed to it.
Like a typical
Bollywood film, there is a lot of
singing
and dancing and eventually, the
girl manages to convince
her reluctant dad and the
couple gets united, followed
by even more
dancing and singing like a film made in
Mumbai. Very entertaining and reminded me of clips
from
Love Guru and the
music video by Devendra Banhard and Natalie Portman. |
