Should you have breast augmentation surgery?
The pros and cons of plastic surgery

By Rebecca Cherry

A lot of women I know have breast implants - a lot of women I've worked with, a lot of women I am friends with. I have seen many a woman go from an A or a B, to a C or a DD, sometimes disastrous, sometimes beautiful. I may really want larger size too...but is it worth it? Maybe sometimes.  Sometimes not. (Related article:  Plastic surgery decisions are not easy)

My one friend (I'll call her Penny) had nothing at all. She is one of the few girls I know who made the same amount of money onstage (as a dancer) after her plastic surgery as she did before - she had an amazing show, wicked stage personality and a bright beaming smile that you could put on the cover of any magazine. However, she didn't even fill out a 32A bra . And we all know how rude people can be, particularly when you have put yourself in a position like we have to.  (Related article:  Safety of saline breast implants reconfirmed)

One day she came up to me and for a few moments I did not recognize who was in front of me.  Something was different about her.  And it is not just the fuller look I saw but also a woman who seemed more confident of herself.  "Rebecca! I have something to show now!" Whoa. She took a more reasonable approach - she didn't want huge Pamela Anderson types, she just wanted to feel like a "normal" woman. I can't say I haven't agreed with her at times. I consider her to be a success story in the world of cosmetic surgery. She walks much straighter, and carries herself amazingly. The damage? Barely a C-cup. Completely reasonable. She looks great. (Related article:  A new procedure now allows full recovery within 24 hours)

Picture of a woman after breast augmentation plastic surgery procedure. Then there's "Chelsea". She also started out with an A-cup. Instead of just getting a bit of a boost...she went up to a DD.  One thing you need for that is a good pair of shoulders and SOME body fat. Else you end up with two rippling bags of saline, straining under a thin layer of skin. Ridiculous. She's about 5'2", 100 lbs and a 38 DD. It's just skin, veins and implants.  She's very proud of her body now (and the stage price that goes with it!!), but I've heard a lot of men laugh at her, and I've felt bad for her. I mean, men still throw all their money at her, but she's somewhat of an object of ridicule. I think I'd rather have my A-cups.  (Related article:  Story of a woman who found happiness even when she had a small chest)

Then there's "Jasmine."  Ever heard of capsular contracture?  It's not pretty. Basically, it means that the tissue around your implants has formed hard, solid scars, 'encapsulating' your tissue. It means that you have something that resembles a baseball. For some reason, this woman thought they made her the greatest thing since the gel push-up bra.  She was about THE most difficult, egotistical woman I had ever worked with. She thought she looked so good, she had the right to throw tantrums and fits in front of customers. (Related:  Breast augmentation complications)  It would have been funny if it were not so pathetic.  She's proof an augmentation job boosts confidence...I suppose... Hers sat on her chest like a pair of wooden oranges...she would have gotten them fixed, but she was too afraid of the pain to go for another surgery. Apparently, breast augmentation is supposed to feel something like a truck parked over your chest. Heavens!  (Related article:  Larger breasts with acupuncture)

Photo of a woman in her pretty bra after surgery.Last, but certainly not least, a very sweet girl I know, "Michelle" had recently gotten hers augmented. She went from a B to a C/D. She looked great. Now, you are supposed to let them heal for 6 weeks before you go back to work (this kind of work, anyway).  Personally, I think you should give it 2 1/2 to 3 months, but what do I know. She had under-the-muscle implants. Fresh.  She spun around the pole...did you know that implants can slip out of their "pocket?" I didn't.  She spent the rest of the week on heavy-duty painkillers, with the left one that looked to be migrating towards her armpit.  Was that really worth thousands of dollars? (Related:  Botox boob job)

And I haven't even touched upon ruptured implants, bad surgeries, or just straight up mistakes.   Hmm.....maybe I will keep my A-cups.   (Related article:  So should you choose silicone implants?)
